In this unit we are learning that y is a vowel if it is at the end of a word.  In words where y is the only vowel, y makes the long i sound.  EX: cry, fly, by
If y is at the end of a word, but there is also a vowel in the middle, y makes the long e sound and the vowel in the middle is usually short.  EC: hungry, fifty, silly. 
 
If your child chooses to complete the Vowels and Consonants activity on the spelling homework, please make sure y is written in RED because it is a vowel in our pattern words.
